Assembly and Collective worship underpin the vision we have of nurturing the spiritual dimension of children and adults at school. These are a highlight of our school week. Our most recent Diocese inspection report states: “ The impact of collective worship on the school community is outstanding.” Assembly with worship is held every day. Members of staff lead most of these with visitors, like Rev. Pridie, ACTS 2 or from charities, attend each term to help lead the worship. Assemblies have a Value theme each month, for example, Justice, Safety, Caring etc. The theme is then followed up in Personal and Social lessons in class. Thursdays is a special Good News Assembly when parents and family members are warmly invited to share the celebration of successes. Teachers and teaching assistants nominate a child from each year group for a Good News certificate. This may be for achievement, progress, helping others or showing acts of kindness. Other awards are also presented for swimming, sporting and special events. Children are welcome to bring in certificates for achievements gained outside school to be presented in Assembly. We regularly celebrate Tae Kwondo, gymnastics, music awards and have even presented a Blue Peter Badge on one occasion! We celebrate Birthdays and invite family members to share in these. At Harvest, Christmas, Easter and in July we hold services in St. Mary’s Church. All classes join in marking these important times in the Christian and our school calendar.
Vision –
St. Mary’s vision is “What we nurture today, flourishes tomorrow.” Within this statement we nurture every aspect of each child – Mind, Body, Spirit and Space, meaning the environment.
We call these our touchstones and school policies reflect these by stating how we nurture each aspect of the children in our care.
The curriculum is the means by which we deliver our vision. All staff and governors at St. Mary’s are passionate about providing a rich and varied curriculum which offers support, enrichment and challenge to learners. To that end we took part in a national research project into Creativity and leaner motivation. As a result, since 2008, our curriculum is planned under 6 areas of learning. These are: Communication, Language and Literacy (including modern languages), Mathematics, Knowledge and Understanding of the World, Creative development, Personal and Social development and Physical development. In all classes children’s ideas are discussed and included when topics are planned. Curriculum information is sent to Parents each term.
The National Curriculum is under review. A revised primary curriculum is due in 2011. This is based on the 6 areas of learning we already use at St. Mary’s.
Curriculum enrichment days are planned each term. These include specialist music days with local Maestro Pedro Brown, playground songs and rhymes with Alison Houlbrooke and recording our first CD at the studios of the RNC for the Blind in Hereford. Other arts events include an exhibition of framed children’s work and work with Arts Council funded specialists in Dance and 3D art. With generous support from PTFA we take all children to see live theatre performances at Christmas. We achieved the prestigious ARTSMARK Silver award at first attempt in 2009.
School clubs enhance the school experience for our children.
These are run by members of school staff, specialist coaches and volunteers including parents/grandparents. In recent terms the following have been offered – Golf, Imagineering(specialist engineering activities), Chess, Keep fit, Dance/drama, Football, Netball, Play, Craft, Spanish, Cricket and Summer sports. Most clubs are free, although some require a small charge for coaching costs or materials.
In addition, we offer after school care for children from 3.15-5.15 daily with a maximum of 10 places.
The Fownhope after school care is run by St. Mary’s School from 3.15pm – 5.15pm Monday to Friday. It is open to all pupils of the school, up to a maximum of 10 children. Parents register for the club by filling in a form available from the school office. We aim to provide flexible childcare during the times we are open and at present we require that you book in advance, as we have 1 member of staff on duty. The after school care runs separately from the various activity clubs which are held throughout the year and which finish in most cases at 4pm. If your child is taking part in one of these clubs they can finish at 4pm and then move to after school club for the rest of the afternoon.
After a busy school day, we aim to provide the children with time to wind down in the way they choose and the structure of the club is informal; activities include playing with toys and games if we are indoors, reading, catching up on homework or just relaxing. On fine days, we use the playground and field for ball games or running around. All children attending will be heard read (for younger children) or supervised with homework if they choose.
A healthy snack is served every day; typical snacks are toast and marmite or a selection of fresh fruit. The club is supervised by Anne Watkins. Anne also works as a teaching assistant at school.
The charges for the club are £3 per hour or part hour for each child per hour or part hour. Payment is on a weekly basis and can be by cash or cheque. If making payment by cheque, these should be made payable to “Herefordshire Council”
If you have any questions you would like to ask about the club which have not been covered here, please contact the school office or drop in to the school hall after school to speak to Anne in person.
